Blue Knights is a nonprofit organization consisting of active and retired law enforcement members who enjoy riding motorcycles.
In the spring of 1974, Ed Gallant from the Bangor, Main Police Department and Chuck Sherman from the Brewer, Main Police Department met with five other officers from the area and formed a small local motorcycle club. The rest, as they say, is history.
In 1975, the National Capital Area Chapter which included Maryland, Virginia and the District of Columbia was formed. After a year, members of the National Capital Area Chapter mutually consented to form two chapters, one in Maryland and the other in Virginia. No chapter was formed in the District of Columbia because there were no members living in the District.
In April 1976, Maryland 1 was chartered, thus becoming the first chapter formed in Maryland. The chapter was chartered in Bladensburg, Maryland and covers Anne Arundel Co, Prince Georges Co, Washington D.C. and parts of Northern Virginia. We currently have eighty-five active members in our chapter. Our members are from Police and Sheriff’s Departments such as Anne Arundel Co. Police, Prince Georges Co. Police and Sheriff’s, Annapolis City Police, Washington D.C. Metropolitan Police, Pentagon Police. We also have members from Federal Agencies such as the Department of Defense, Secret Service, DHS, ICE, CBP and the FBI.
We meet on the second Tuesday of each month at the Prince Georges Co. Police, FOP Lodge 89, in Largo Maryland at 7:30pm, and our primary goal of the Blue Knights is to enhance the image of motorcycling and to promote a better understanding between the motorcycles and the general public.
